Growing up as a child, his concept about life is different, one that can even be compared to a 40-year old intelligent man. Instead of just letting his sickness take control of his life, he wanted to be in command. He was obsesses with all the frailties of one’s body and at a very young age was motivated to overcome his own afflictions.

At that time, medicines and medical practices were not as established as it is now. So, he turned into a different alternative, one of which he engages his own mind and body to have the power over his born weaknesses. Through several years of studying the human muscle structure and generally the body and was used as a human model for anatomical drawings at the young age of fourteen, the ins and outs of our anatomical structure was sure close to his heart.

And after several attempts of trial and error to create the perfect exercise program, he came up with a series of low-impact movement we now popularly know as Pilates. However, although he was born in the late 1800’s, it wasn’t until the early 1920’s where the movements were truly perfected.

From the year 1912 until the dawn of the Firs World War, Joseph worked as an amateur boxer, a self-defense instructor, and a circus performer. He was jailed along with some other German nationals and was tagged as the alien enemy.

He developed a unique fitness routine during the war. Despite the epidemic of influenza and the critical living conditions, Joseph not only survived, he even benefited from his newly found, innovative, approach to fitness.

Working as an intern, he devised a contraption into which non-ambulatory patients can perform strengthening exercises. This was made possible through the use of bedsprings attached to the walls just right above a patient’s bed.

This was the forerunner of the modern day equipment allowed movement stabilization thus resulting in muscle strengthening and improved overall fitness and health, versus the normal side effects if immobility.
